To some, it may seem that an article on kindness is unnecessary. However, in today's society, kindness is not as common as it used to be. People have become more selfish, or just do not take the time to be kind to others. So, we need to see what God's Word has to say about kindness.
In Ephesians 4:32, Paul writes, "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." The word translated, kind, from the original language means, "1) fit, fit for use, useful; 1a) virtuous, good 2) manageable a) mild, pleasant (as opp. to harsh, hard, sharp, bitter) 2b) of things: more pleasant, of people, kind, benevolent." Notice the first part of the definition - "Fit for use, useful." A person who is kind is useful! So Paul tells us to be useful to one another.
Jesus said in Luke 6:35:
But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
The word, "kind," in this verse, is from the same word found in Ephesians 4:32. So we are to be kind as our Lord is kind. The word is translated, goodness, in Romans 2:4, and gracious, in 1 Peter 2:3.
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:4, NKJV, that great chapter that shows us what true love is, "Love suffers long and is kind...." So the highest kind of love, agape, and kindness are inseparable!
Kindness is one of the "Eight Christian virtues," or "graces," of 2 Peter 1:5-8. After listing these eight - faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity (love), Peter concludes in verse 8, "For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Oprah Winfrey lists "35 Little Acts Of Kindness" on her website, Oprah.com. The website, 366 Random Acts Of Kindness, lists numerous acts of kindness. With a little thought, you should be able to come up with many acts of kindness of your own. Even the smallest acts of kindness can change a person's life in a big way. We may not even know at the time, but it could make a difference for them later in life. 
Jesus said in Matthew 10:42, "And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward."
Paul writes in Romans 12:10, NKJV, "Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another." Kindness is selfless.
