WHY DO WE SING?

One of the five main things that we do in worship is singing. But have you ever wondered why do we sing? True, we sing because the early Christians did it, and, more importantly, because we are commanded to. But, again, why?

The Bible tells us why we are to sing. The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 5:19:

…speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father…

Paul makes a similar statement to the Colossians in Colossians 3:16-17. There, he includes the words, “…teaching and admonishing one another…” We sing to teach and encourage one another. Paul continues, “… singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.  We sing to thank God for His many blessings.

James writes in James 5:13, “Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises.”  We sing to praise God for his mighty works.  David sang in Psalm 101:1, “I will sing of lovingkindness and justice, To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.” We sing to praise God for His loving kindness.

Singing is more than an “act of worship.” It is a means of teaching and admonishing one another and praising God for His great goodness.
